Direct Tax Collection Data: Even though Uttar Pradesh is the largest state in the country in terms of population, it is far behind many other states of the country in terms of direct tax collection. According to the tax collection data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Uttar Pradesh has contributed only Rs 48,333.44 crore in the total direct tax collection in the financial year 2023-24. Whereas the total direct tax collection of Bihar, the country’s second largest state in terms of population, in the financial year 2023-24 has been Rs 6692.73 crore. This is less than Rs 6845.32 crore for the financial year 2022-23.
Maharashtra number one in paying taxes
CBDT has released time series data regarding direct tax collection. According to this data, in the financial year 2023-24, direct tax of Rs 19.62 lakh crore was collected from all the states and union territories. You will be surprised to know that the biggest contribution in this is from Maharashtra. In this financial year, direct tax of Rs 7,61,716.30 crore (Rs 7.62 lakh crore) has come from Maharashtra. That means Maharashtra alone’s contribution to the total direct tax collection is 39 percent. Maharashtra brings 15 times more tax to the government treasury as direct tax than Uttar Pradesh.
Direct tax collection includes Income Tax, Corporate Tax and Securities Transaction Tax (STT).
Karnataka-Delhi at second third place
After Maharashtra, Karnataka ranks second in terms of paying direct taxes. Karnataka has paid Rs 2.35 lakh crore as direct tax in the financial year 2023-24. Delhi is in third place, which has contributed Rs 2.03 lakh crore to the treasury as direct tax. Tamil Nadu is in fourth place, which has paid Rs 1.27 lakh crore as direct tax in the financial year 2023-24.
Gujarat is at fifth place with a contribution of Rs 93,300 crore and Telangana is at sixth place with a recovery of Rs 84,439 crore. After this, Haryana is at number seven. Haryana has contributed Rs 70,947.31 crore as direct tax. After this, West Bengal is at eighth place with Rs 60,374.64 crore.
