Delhi’s water has a very high amount of salt. 1 out of every 4 water samples has been found to have high salt content. According to the report of Central Ground Water Authority, more than 25% of Delhi’s water has high salt content. This water can prove to be harmful for human health.
Rajasthan is ahead of Delhi in this report
The condition of water in the country’s capital Delhi is a matter of great concern. According to a report of ‘Central Ground Water Authority’ (CGWA), salt has been found in more than 25 percent of water samples in Delhi. Rajasthan is ahead of Delhi in this matter. Salt has been found in 30% of the water samples there. The report has revealed that the amount of salt in the water is very high, which is not fit for human consumption.
Water samples taken from 95 places in Delhi
According to the report of CGWA, the National Green Tribunal had taken water samples from 95 places in Delhi in the year 2022-23. Out of these, 24 samples had EC more than 3,000 micro siemens per centimeter. EC means electric conductivity which tells how much salt is dissolved in the water. They were collected from New Delhi, North, North West, South West and West Delhi.

Where is the most saline water?
Areas with the highest EC include Rohini’s Barwala (9,623 units), Pitampura’s Sandesh Vihar (8,679 units) and Tagore Garden (7,417 units). EC levels have also been found to be very high in Najafgarh Town, Sultanpur Dabas, Chhawla, Alipur Garhi, Hiran Kudna Village and Singhu Village.
How is salt dissolved in water detected?
According to the report, EC is used to detect salt dissolved in water. This is an easy and fast way to detect it. The work of EC is related to the total dissolved solids (TDS) in water. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the amount of TDS in water should not be more than 500 milligrams. This is equivalent to about 750 micro siemens per centimeter of EC.
