Kartik Month 2024: Kartik month will last from 18 October to 15 November 2024. This month has been described as very special in the Puranas. Tarakasur was killed in the month of Kartik
According to mythological beliefs, in this month Shiva’s son Kartikeya had killed the demon Tarakasura. According to the story, Tarakasura was the son of the demon Vajrang and the king of the demons. To conquer the gods, he did penance to Lord Shiva. He had sought the boon of Mahadev to have dominion over the demons and not to be killed by anyone other than his own son Shiva.
The gods told Lord Brahma that Tarakasura would be ended only by the son of Shiva. The gods got Shiva and Parvati married and from them Kartikeya (Skanda) was born. The gods made Skanda their commander and Tarakasura was killed in the battle. According to Skanda Purana, Shiva’s son Kartikeya was raised by Kritikas, hence he was named Kartikeya.
