IPL franchises and BCCI Meeting IPL 2025: A series of meetings has started to make the Indian Premier League 2025 even more special. On July 31, a meeting was held between IPL franchise owners and officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in which many important decisions were discussed. The future of the league was discussed in this meeting, which included topics like retention, impact player rules, foreign players, Indian capped and uncapped players, mega and mini auction.
Controversy over mega auction
IPL 2024 finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders were against the mega auction. They believed that it took them many years to build their team and the mega auction could upset this balance. At the same time, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, who have not yet won the IPL trophy, were in favor of the mega auction so that they could improve their team.
All the owners seemed unanimous regarding foreign players
The BCCI suggested that if a foreign player leaves the IPL for ‘inappropriate’ reasons, he should be banned for 2 years. All the franchises agreed to this proposal.
Debate on retention
There was a dispute between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings regarding retention. 4 to 8 players can be retained in the mega auction, while there is no such limit in the mini auction.
Controversy over the impact player rule
The impact player rule was also discussed. Players and coaches are not in favor of continuing this rule, while broadcasters want to retain it. The BCCI has not yet taken any final decision on this.
Price of uncapped players
BCCI Chief Executive Officer Hemang Amin suggested that the base price of Indian players who have been inactive for five years or more can be reduced to give them a chance to get selected in the auction.
The matter of MS Dhoni arose
Chennai Super Kings want to see MS Dhoni playing in the IPL for the 2025 season. They want to bring back an old rule that expired in 2021, under which a player was considered ‘uncapped’ five years after retirement. However, the other franchises rejected the proposal.
