Workers Conditions in India: The working conditions in India do not seem to be improving. Here, making people work beyond the stipulated time limit has become a habit of companies. Indian companies have come second in the world in making people work more than the stipulated time limit. The International Labor Organization (ILO) report claims that more than 51 percent of the employees in India work more than 49 hours a week. Our neighboring country Bhutan has been at the top among the countries in the world that make people work the most. 61 percent of the work force of Bhutan, which measures the progress of the country in the name of Happiness Index, works more than 49 hours a week.
On average, every Indian employee is working 46.7 hours a week
According to the report of ILO (International Labour Organization), on an average every Indian employee is working 46.7 hours a week. Apart from Bhutan, the condition of employees is also bad in our neighboring countries. 47 percent people in Bangladesh and 40 percent people in Pakistan are working more than 49 hours a week. Both these countries have also been included in the top 10 in the ILO list. This shows that the condition of employees in South Asia is almost the same. In countries like United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Lesotho, employees are made to work longer on average. This figure is 50.9 hours in UAE and 50.4 hours in Lesotho. However, only 39 percent of the population of UAE and 36 percent of Lesotho have to work this many hours in a week.

Employees in Netherlands work for 31.6 hours a week and in Norway for 33.7 hours. In Germany, they are made to work for 34.2 hours, in Japan for 36.6 hours and in Singapore for 42.6 hours. According to the ILO report, the country with the lowest average in the world is Vanuatu. The employees here work for an average of only 24.7 hours a week. Only 4 percent people are working more than 49 hours a week. Similarly, employees work for 27.3 hours in Kiribati and 30.4 hours in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Recently, the case of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old employee working for Ernst & Young India, dying due to overwork has gained momentum. EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani has also apologized for this. Along with this, Union Labor Minister Shobha Karandlaje has also started an investigation into this matter. The ILO report has pointed to the need to focus on work life balance and mental health in India’s labor policies.
