Chandgi Ram Kaliraman was born on 9 November 1937 in Sisai village of Hisar in Haryana. He started wrestling at the age of 21. He became the national champion in 1961. Chandgi Ram Kaliraman ji served in the Jat Regiment in the Indian Army. Chandgi Ram Kaliraman ji also has many titles and medals to his name.

Chandgiram Kaliraman was a prominent Indian wrestler in the 1960s, winning major titles such as Hind Kesari, Bharat Kesari, Bharat Bheem, Rustam-e-Hind and Maha Bharat Kesari. Chandgiram Kaliraman was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1969 and the Padma Shri in 1971. He won a gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games and represented India at the 1972 Olympic Games.
Chandgiram Kaliraman ji was known as a vegetarian wrestler
Chandgi Ram Kaliraman represented India in the Munich Olympics 1972. But initially the Indian Wrestling Association did not select him for the Olympics. Later, when news about this was published in major newspapers and criticism was made, he was sent to the Munich Olympics 1972. After going there, foreign wrestlers were surprised to know that Chandgi Ram Kaliraman is a vegetarian wrestler. After which he got a different identity as a vegetarian wrestler.
Chandgiram Kaliraman ji brought revolution in wrestling
In 1997, Chandgi Ram began an effort to popularise women’s wrestling in India. He involved his daughters Sonika and Dipika in wrestling and established India’s first women’s wrestling training centre, Chandgi Ram Akhara. Despite initial opposition and difficulties, Chandgi Ram attempted to bring about a change in the field of wrestling through exhibition matches for women.
