India’s First Billionaire: Whenever we talk about the rich people of India, the names of people like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani and Tata-Birla come to our mind. If you think that these are the richest men of India, then you will have to go a little back in history. Then you will come to know about an Indian who had gold and diamond mines. Trucks full of gold bricks used to be parked in his garden. He used to use the 185 carat Jacob Diamond as a paperweight on his papers. In the year 1940, his wealth was 236 billion dollars and he was the richest man not only in India but also in the world. We are talking about the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan.
Mir Osman Ali Khan appeared on the cover of Time magazine
Mir Osman Ali Khan was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1937. Times Now estimated the value of his 185 carat Jacob Diamond to be Rs 1000 crore. Most of his wealth was accumulated between 1930 and 1940. According to a Business Standard document, by 1940 his wealth had reached $236 billion. Despite this, he was known for his simple lifestyle. He used to wear simple kurta pyjama. He did not even care whether these were ironed or not. He was often seen in simple slippers and shoes. He was seen in his Turkish cap for 35 years.
The Indian army attacked and ended the rule of Nizam
There was an old bed in the bedroom of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Simple furniture and an ashtray were lying there. Looking at him, it did not seem at all that he was the richest man in the world. When the country became independent in 1947, the Nizam of Hyderabad decided to go to Pakistan instead of India. After this, in September 1948, the Indian Army had to attack Hyderabad. This is known as Operation Polo. With this, the rule of the Nizam came to an end. Along with this, his wealth also went to the government.
