Olympic Games: Just a few days ago, many sports including cricket, wrestling and badminton have been dropped from the Commonwealth Games. These are some of the sports in which Indian athletes have been winning a lot of medals. On the other hand, now under the new policies of the Government of India, the amount of assistance given to Olympic athletes can be banned. This decision can be taken under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). According to a media report, new rules may be announced soon regarding the athletes who will get help from the government.
According to The Indian Express, this topic is being discussed in the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC). Former athletes, coaches and government officials are also included in this committee. At present there are 300 athletes who are getting financial assistance under the TOPS scheme. An MOC official has indicated that if the new policy is implemented, the number of athletes receiving financial assistance may be halved. No decision has been taken on this yet, but when the performance of Indian athletes in the Paris Olympics was assessed, it was definitely considered to halve the number.
In the recent meeting, a decision on financial assistance can be taken on the basis of how close an athlete comes to a medal. After the conclusion of Paris Olympics, the issue of reduction in financial assistance has been much discussed. Meanwhile, India’s veteran badminton athlete Prakash Padukone had made a big claim that during the Olympics 2024, pampering was shown towards the athletes, due to which their hunger to win medals had reduced. A suggestion has also come forward that under the TOPS scheme, some athletes who are not eligible for funds will get financial help but will not be allowed to participate in personal coaches and other special training programs.
