Why is there a controversy about ‘IC 814’
Let us tell you that this web series is directed by Anubhav Sinha and is inspired by the book ‘Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story’ by flight captain Devi Sharan and journalist Srinjoy Chaudhary. IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack was released on Netflix India on 29 August. The six-episode series is based on the real-life incident of December 1999, when Indian Airlines flight 814 from Kathmandu to New Delhi was hijacked. The flight was forced to land at several places before Kandahar in Afghanistan, which was under the rule of the Taliban.
In the series, the hijackers of IC 814 are named as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. The naming of the hijackers as Bhola and Shankar has sparked outrage on social media as netizens criticized the use of Hindu names for potential terrorists. Netizens have trended “Boycott Netflix” on X. Director Anubhav Sinha is also being criticized for deliberately using Hindu names for the hijackers instead of their real names.
What did Kangana say amid the ‘IC 814’ controversy?
Actress turned politician Kangana Ranaut also reacted to the IC 814 controversy in an X-post on Monday. She wrote in her post, “Censorship is only for some of us who do not want this country to be divided.”
Kangana wrote, “The law of the country is that one can show a lot of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequences or censorship, one can also distort real life events for their political purposes, communists or leftists have complete freedom in the world for such anti-national expressions, but as a nationalist no OTT platform allows us to make films that revolve around the integrity and unity of India, it seems that censorship is only for some of us who do not want this country to be divided and make films on historical facts. This is extremely disappointing and unjust,”
