Noel Tata Update: After the demise of the country’s gem, Ratan Tata, the biggest question was that who would sit on the post of Tata Trust which Ratan Tata was holding since 1991? Who will be the successor who will live up to Ratan Tata’s basic spirit of man and humanity? Ratan Tata’s successor was chosen within 24 hours of his funeral. In fact, the basic mantra given by Ratan Tata behind this is Keep moving i.e. keep moving forward.
Tribute paid to Ratan Tata first
A meeting of the Tata Trust Board was called at 11 am on Friday, October 11, 2024. This meeting was called in a Tata office located on the 26th floor of A Tower of the World Trade Center in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, away from Bombay House (Tata Trust office), away from the media and outside influences. All the members of Tata Trust Board were present in this meeting. First of all tribute was paid to Ratan Tata. The board members also shared anecdotes from Ratan Tata’s biography in the tribute meeting.
Who were present in the meeting?
Noel Tata – half brother of Ratan Tata. He is not on the board of Tata Sons, but chairs the boards of Trent and Tata Investment Corporation.
Jimmy N Tata – Younger brother of Ratan Tata. The age is old. Keep a low profile.
Venu Srinivasan – Vice Chairman of Tata Trust. Sundaram is the honorary chairman of Clayton Limited and TVS Motor Company. He is also on the board of Tata Sons and represents Tata Trusts on the Tata Sons board.
Vijay Singh- Vice Chairman of Tata Trust, former IAS. He is also on the board of Tata Sons as a representative of the trust.
Mehli Mistry: He is a renowned businessman of the country. Mistry joined Tata Trusts in October 2022 and runs the M Pallonji Group of Companies. Mistry was considered a close confidant of Ratan Tata.
Jahangir HC Jahangir- Pune businessman Jahangir runs a hospital. He joined Tata Trust in 2022.
Darius Khambatta: Senior advocate in Mumbai. Khambatta is well-known in Mumbai’s legal circles, having represented Tata in many cases.
Pramit Jhaveri: Former CEO of Citi India, Pramit joined Tata Trusts soon after retiring from the bank.
Venu Srinivasan proposed the name of Noel Tata
After the tribute meeting, the Tata Trust Board meeting started. Information about what Ratan Tata left behind in the name of Tata Trust was shared. Before the start of the Tata Trust Board meeting, Noel Tata, Darius Khambata and Mehli Mistry were considered to be in the race for the post of Chairman. But Venu Srinivasan, vice-chairman of Tata Trust, proposed that Noel was the right successor to the Tata post. Everyone unanimously agreed to this. The decision was taken unanimously in the board meeting of Tata Trust and Noel Tata’s name was approved for the post of Tata Trust Chairman. It was decided that Noel Tata would replace Ratan Tata. Ratan Tata was the chairman of Tata Trust since March 1991.

Noel Tata has been appointed as the new Chairman of Tata Trusts, Noel now heads the two most important charitable trusts of the Tata Group. Noel has become the 11th chairman of Tata Trust. Sir Dorabji has become the sixth chairman of Tata Trust. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust together hold 66% stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. Tata Trusts is one of India’s largest public charitable trusts, which had contributed approximately Rs 470 crore as donations during the financial year 2022-23.
