Finger Length and Alcohol Habits: By now you must have heard that fingers reveal your personality. But you will be surprised to know that your fingers can also tell what is your connection with alcohol. Meaning, how much alcohol can you drink? Yes, it may sound a bit strange but this has been revealed in a recent study. The study explains how your alcohol drinking habits can be estimated by looking at the fingers of your hand. Let us know about this study…
A new study published in the American Journal of Human Biology states that the ratio of the length between your index finger and ring finger can predict how much alcohol you can drink. In this study named ‘2D:4D Ratio’, it has been told that there is a relation between the length of the index finger (2D) and the length of the ring finger (4D). This ratio is not determined randomly based on anatomy but comes from the amount of testosterone and estrogen felt in the womb.

What does the study say?
In general, people exposed to high levels of testosterone before birth have a lower 2D:4D ratio. This means that their ring finger is longer than their index finger, while this ratio is higher in people exposed to more estrogen. In this study, students from 258 universities, including 169 girls and 89 boys, were examined. The average age of all of them was 22 years.
The researchers measured the length of the fingers of all of them using callipers and assessed their alcohol drinking patterns using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), a list of questions developed by WHO.

Connection of alcohol to testosterone levels
In this study, a team of scientists from Swansea University and Lodz Medical University in Poland found that a low 2D:4D ratio indicates high levels of testosterone before birth. Such people are more likely to drink alcohol. The risks associated with alcohol are also higher in them. Whereas both men and women with a low 2D:4D ratio consumed less alcohol, their audit trail was ever higher.
How to guess whether you drink alcohol by looking at your finger?
According to the study, the fourth finger of heavy drinkers is longer than the second finger, which indicates higher testosterone than exposure to estrogen before birth. Interestingly, it is more effective for the right hand than for the left hand. Meaning, the hormones of right-handed people may be more attracted towards alcohol.
