India WTC Final Qualification Scenario: How many people thought till about 2 months ago that the race for the World Test Championship final would have become exciting. India, Australia and South Africa are the three teams out of which only two will be able to make it to the finals. At the same time, Sri Lanka, which is in fourth place in the points table, has little hope of going to the finals. Now looking at the condition of the India-Australia third Test being played in Brisbane, Team India’s hopes of reaching the final may get a big blow.
The Brisbane Test has been affected by rain, so it is probably headed for a draw. Since the result of this match is now almost impossible in India’s favor. If the match is a draw, both the teams will get four points each, due to which the points percentage of India as well as Australia will reduce slightly. The equations are becoming such that if the Brisbane Test is a draw, then Team India will have to depend on other teams to play the final of the World Test Championship. Just like what happened with RCB in IPL 2024 and Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2024.
Difficult path to WTC final
If the India-Australia third Test ends in a draw, Team India will have to ensure that they win their next two matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at any cost. If India also wins the Melbourne and Sydney Tests, then its points percentage can go up to a maximum of 60.53. This percentage will prove to be enough to take Rohit and company to the finals because Australia will not be able to go beyond this points percentage even if they defeat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the upcoming Test series.
Let us tell you that South Africa is currently the table topper and to make it to the finals it has to register only one win in 2 tests against Pakistan. Africa has the best chances of going to the finals. Therefore, if all the equations are considered, only one of India and Australia will be able to enter the title clash.
