Soil Borne Infections : Whether walking barefoot in the garden or playing in the soil, when the soil touches the soles of our feet, it can make us feel refreshed. But recently a new study has revealed that many types of bacteria and viruses are present in the soil around us, which can be dangerous for our health.
The study, led by Xingqiu Liao of Virginia Tech, found how soil bacteria can carry antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Micro instructions that allow bacteria to survive through antibiotics. These genes can serve as a blueprint. Bacteria can spread rapidly between species and start dangerous networks.

What does the study say?
The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, analyzed nearly 600 Listeria genomes from soil samples in the US and found how environmental factors can influence the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes.
Study author Jingqiu Liao said in a university press release that soil is an important store of resistant bacteria and ARGs. Environmental factors can increase ARGs by creating conditions that promote the survival, spread, and exchange of these genes between bacteria.

What kind of dangers are there from soil?
Researchers found that bacteria and viruses present in soil can pose many threats to our health. According to the study, bacteria present in the soil can cause antibiotic resistance, due to which the effect of antibiotics in our body reduces. Whereas soil viruses can increase viral infections in the body.
At the same time, bacteria can cause risk of bacterial infection in the body. The results of this study make it clear that bacteria causing many dangerous diseases are present under the soil. Therefore, we should be conscious of keeping the soil around us clean.

Check the soil regularly.
Take appropriate measures to destroy bacteria and viruses present in the soil.
Avoid going to any dirty place barefoot.
