Goods and Services Tax: After the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the country, tax evasion is no longer so easy. Despite this, people find some way or the other to evade GST. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) keeps working continuously to catch such people. According to the DGGI report for the financial year 2023-24, they have revealed GST evasion of Rs 2.01 lakh crore in the country. If we add the amount caught by the Central GST zone to this, then this figure reaches Rs 2.37 lakh crore. The highest number of tax evasion cases in the country were caught in Mumbai.
GST evasion of Rs 70,985 crore detected in Mumbai zone
According to the GST Intelligence report, DGGI (Directorate General of GST Intelligence) and Central GST Zone together have disclosed 20,576 cases of tax evasion. Out of these, GST evasion of Rs 70,985 crore has been detected from Mumbai Zone. After this, tax evasion of Rs 18,313 crore has been detected in Delhi, Rs 17,328 crore in Pune, Rs 15,502 crore in Gurugram and Rs 11,081 crore in Hyderabad.
GST evasion figures almost doubled in one financial year
After the implementation of GST in the year 2017, cases of tax evasion are increasing continuously. According to the report, GST Intelligence had caught tax evasion of Rs 1.01 lakh crore in the financial year 2022-23. This figure has almost doubled in a single financial year. About 46 percent of GST evasion cases are of non-payment of tax, 20 percent of fake input tax credit and 19 percent of taking benefits through wrong means. This figure was Rs 7,879 crore in the financial year 2017-18, Rs 19,319 crore in 2018-19, Rs 21,739 crore in 2019-20, Rs 31,908 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 50,325 crore in 2021-22.
The most irregularities are being done in these sectors
According to GST Intelligence, massive tax evasion is being done in online gaming, banking, financial services, insurance sector, iron, copper, scrap and alloys. According to the report, the highest GST evasion of Rs 81,875 crore was detected in the online gaming sector in the last financial year. Apart from this, GST evasion worth crores of rupees has been detected in pan masala, tobacco, cigarettes, bidis, plywood, wood, paper, electronic items, marble, granite and tiles.
