Higher educational institutions will be able to give graduate students the option to shorten or extend the duration of courses. The University Grants Commission has approved the Standard Operating Procedure for offering Accelerated Degree Programs and Extended Degree Programmes. The degrees will specify the duration of the courses and will be treated at par with a prescribed duration degree for further study or employment. Students will be able to shorten or extend the period of study depending on their abilities.
According to UGC Chairman Jagdish Kumar, higher educational institutions will soon be able to offer undergraduate (UG) students the option to shorten or extend the duration of courses. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for higher educational institutions offering Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) and Extended Degree Program (EDP) in a meeting this week.
What did the UGC Chairman say?
UGC Chairman said that the draft norms will now be made public for feedback from stakeholders. Kumar said that the degrees will mention shortening or increasing the duration of the courses and these degrees will be considered equivalent to degrees of prescribed duration for further studies or jobs. –
This option will be available
Jagdish Kumar said that students can use this option to shorten or extend their study period depending on their study abilities. Under ADP, students will have the option to complete a three-year or four-year course in less time by earning additional credits per semester, while under EDP, students will have the option to extend the duration of the course by earning fewer credits per semester.
