Let us know why the festival of Ganesh Utsav is celebrated for 10 days and what is the reason behind it.
Why is Ganesh festival celebrated for 10 days?
It is believed that Ved Vyas prayed to Lord Ganesha to write the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha wrote the Mahabharata for 10 days without stopping. During this time, due to continuous writing at one place, dust and mud accumulated on Ganesha’s body and on the 10th day, Ganesha took a bath in the Saraswati river and cleaned the dust and mud accumulated on his body. Since then, the idol of Ganesha is immersed on the 10th day of Ganesh Utsav.
According to another belief, during these 10 days, Lord Ganesha travels on earth, where his devotees welcome him and invite him to their homes. During this time, his idol is installed in homes and public places. On the tenth day i.e. Anant Chaturdashi, this festival concludes, the idol of Ganesha is immersed and devotees bid him farewell and seek blessings to come next year.
How did Ganesh ji originate?
Lord Shri Ganesh Ji was born from the dirt of Maa Parvati’s body. She breathed life into the idol and assigned Ganesh to guard her chamber. When Goddess Parvati’s husband Lord Shiva tried to enter the chamber, Ganesh, unaware of Shiva’s identity, blocked his way. Lord Shiva got angry and cut off Ganesh’s head. The grieving mother pleaded with Shiva to bring her son back to life. Shiva replaced Ganesh’s head with an elephant’s head and he got a new life.
