DGHS Writes to IPL Chairperson Regarding The Regulation of Tobacco and Clcohol Advertisements and Sales during the IPL 2025

Ban on alcohol and tobacco promotion in ipl 2025: The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League will start from 22 March. The tournament will be played in Home and Away format, for which all the teams have started preparations at their own level. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has written a letter to the IPL chairman and has written a letter to stop advertisements of tobacco and liquor including surrogate advertisement and sales during the IPL.

It has been written in the letter that at present, serious diseases like diabetes, lung diseases, cancer are increasing rapidly in India. Consumption of tobacco and alcohol is the main reason for increasing these diseases. India ranks second among the most deaths due to tobacco. Every year 14 lakh people die in India due to alcohol. Earlier, the Ministry of Health had also recommended a ban on the promotion of alcohol and tobacco during the sports tournament.

The main things written in the letter

• During the IPL matches, all advertisements of tobacco and liquor should be banned on the broadcast platforms inside and outside the stadium.
• Ban on the sale of tobacco and liquor at stadium and IPL sites.
• Being the ideal of the youth, people associated with the sports world should not promote liquor and tobacco company in any way.

Millions of earnings from advertisements in IPL

IPL is the world’s largest T20 league. The craze of this league is very much in India. There is a ticket for every match. In the case of views, more viewers are recorded every year than last year. According to a report, Geostar has kept a revenue target of 4.5 thousand crores for IPL 2025. It is estimated that all 10 teams can earn around 1300 crores in sponsorship revenue. Advertisements of tobacco etc. are shown directly or indirectly during the IPL matches. It has a bad effect on the younger generation. These advertisements also earns a hefty amount of BCCI.

IPL 2025 will start from 22 March

The upcoming season of IPL will be played from 22 March. The first match will be played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Garden. The final match of this tournament, which lasts for more than 2 months, will be played on 25 May.
