Dengue is spread by the bite of a female mosquito (Aedes aegypti). The mosquito gets infected when it drinks the blood of a person infected with the virus. After about a week, the mosquito can again spread the virus by biting a healthy person. Dengue spreads havoc everywhere as the weather changes. Health experts also advise people to be cautious about dengue fever. Dengue survives in all types of environments, be it clean or dirty. It is not that dengue thrives only in dirt.
There are four types of dengue fever
Dengue fever is caused by one of four types of dengue viruses. You cannot get dengue fever by being around an infected person. Instead, dengue fever is spread by mosquito bites. The two types of mosquitoes that most often carry the dengue virus can also spread around homes and neighborhoods.
What to do to avoid not only mosquitoes but also dengue
- Sleep only after using a mosquito net.
- Prevent water from accumulating in or around the house
- Keep changing the water in the cooler every day.
- Go out only wearing full-sleeved clothes.
- Keep the water tank covered.
- Use insecticides and larvicidal medicines.
- Adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle.
- Take every appropriate step to increase the immunity of the body.
How to treat dengue
- If symptoms of dengue fever appear, one should immediately consult a doctor.
- Doctors may advise drinking as much water and coconut water as possible.
- Include kiwi, papaya, beetroot, pomegranate and green vegetables in your diet.
- Rest your body as much as possible.
- In severe cases of dengue, blood, platelet transfusion or oxygen therapy may be given.
Dengue fever can also cause organ damage
Severe dengue fever can lead to internal blood circulation and organ damage. Blood pressure can drop to dangerous levels, causing shock. In some cases, severe dengue fever can cause death. Women who have dengue fever during pregnancy can spread the virus to their baby during delivery. In addition, babies born to women who have dengue fever during pregnancy have a higher risk of premature birth, low birth weight, or fetal distress.
Dengue fever causes a high fever — over 104 F (40 C) — and any of the following signs and symptoms:
- Headache
- pain in the muscles, bones, or joints
- Nausea
- Vomit
- Pain behind the eyes
- swollen glands
- Rashes
