On this day Cricket History 17th December: The game of cricket is centuries old and it entered India during the British Raj. ODI cricket started much later as the first ODI match in history was played between Australia and England in 1971. Many decades before that, Team India had made its Test debut in 1932. While representing Team India, legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar have scored many centuries in their career. But many decades before all this, know which player had scored the first century in cricket for India?
This was the time when the England team was touring India in the year 1933. The first match of the three-Test series was played in Mumbai. CK Nayudu was captaining Team India, unfortunately India’s first innings was reduced to just 219 runs. In reply, England scored 438 runs in the first innings and took a huge lead of 219 runs. In this first innings, Mohammad Nisar took a total of 5 wickets for India.
Lala Amarnath: India’s first centurion
England was ahead by 219 runs in the first innings. When the Indian team came to bat again, the opening pair of Syed Wazir Ali and Janardan Navale had returned to the pavilion with the score of 21. Lala Amarnath came to bat at number three and along with captain CK Nayudu, he made a huge and brilliant partnership of 186 runs in the second innings. Naidu was out after scoring 67 runs, but Lala Amarnath remained at the crease for a long time and played an inning of 118 runs.
This was the only century in Amarnath’s Test career as he was dropped from Team India in 1936 after an argument with the Maharaja of Vizianagaram. After that his return to Team India came after the independence of 1947. Amarnath was made the first captain of the Indian team after India’s independence.
