Cricket Australia Bans Duleep Samaraweera for 20 Years: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been banned by Cricket Australia (CA) from any coaching position in cricket for 20 years. Samaraweera has been accused of a serious breach of the code of conduct, which Cricket Australia has described as “highly reprehensible”. Under this ban, Samaraweera will not be able to coach or be appointed in any role in any team of Cricket Australia, state associations, Big Bash League (BBL) or Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
He was the head coach of the Victoria women’s cricket team
52-year-old Dulip Samaraweera played 7 Tests and 5 ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1995. After this, he was the assistant coach of the Victoria Women’s Cricket Team and the Melbourne Stars WBBL team. Earlier this year, he was appointed the head coach of the Victoria Women’s Team, but he resigned within two weeks. It is said that he wanted to appoint his own staff, which was not approved due to state policies. However, the case of serious conduct violations imposed on him was different from this.
Banned for inappropriate behaviour with players
The action taken against Dulip Samaraweera is in a separate case. Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Commission investigation has found that Samaraweera violated clause 2.23, which relates to inappropriate behavior with players. Although the full details of his conduct have not been made public, it has been described as “coercive” and inappropriate, which had a bad effect on a player.
Cricket Victoria CEO supported the decision
Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins supported the decision, calling Dulip Samaraweera’s conduct “extremely reprehensible”. He said, “The decision taken by the Code of Conduct Commission is correct and we support this decision. Samaraweera’s conduct is against our values and will never be tolerated at Cricket Victoria.”
Nick Cummins also praised the player who raised his voice against Samaraweera and said, “The courage shown by the victim is commendable. We will provide her all possible help and support in the future as well.”
