Eye Problems in Children : One in every three children’s eyesight is getting weak. If this continues, by 2050, 50% children will have weak near or far vision. This shocking revelation has been made in a study done at the global level. The most surprising thing is that 85% children in Asian countries have weak eyesight. 73% children in Japan, 40-40% children in South Korea, China and Russia have weak near or far vision. All these children are 10 years of age or younger.
Where is the least risk?
According to this study published in the ‘British Journal of Ophthalmology’, there has been an increase of about 36% in the cases of weak eyesight of children in 2023 as compared to 1990. The report states that about 15% of children in the UK, Ireland and America are suffering from the problem of weak eyes (Short Sighted Problems). While the lowest is in Paraguay and Uganda, where only 1% of children have weak eyesight.

Which children have more problems with weak eyes?
This study conducted on more than 50 lakh children from 50 countries revealed that after the corona pandemic, the problem of weak eyesight in children at an early age has increased a lot. Doctors say that this is a genetic problem. Sometimes this problem also occurs in children when the parents have weak eyesight. The eyes of children who are up to 2 years of age and have started going to school are deteriorating quickly. In India, a child of 2.5 years goes to play school. Whereas, in Singapore-Hong Kong, children start going to pre-school by the age of 2 years.

Why are children’s eyes getting weak
According to the study, reading too much at a young age, watching mobile, TV screen has a very bad effect on the eye muscles of young children. The study has revealed that in Africa, the school going age is 6-8 years, so children there have less eye problems compared to other countries. Since girls stay at home more time, they have more eye problems.
How to protect children’s eyes
1. Reduce children’s screen time, take them for outdoor games.
2. Ask them to take breaks every once in a while while using the smartphone or watching TV.
3. Children sit in the wrong posture while watching TV, computer or mobile. Always maintain a distance of 20-30 inches from the screen.
4. Make children exercise and maintain a good diet. Include the right amount of zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C and E in their food.
5. Keep getting children’s eye checkups done regularly.
