Chhath Puja 2024: The four-day festival of Chhath is considered extremely popular in North India, especially in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Through this article we will look at both the classical and folk forms of Chhath. First, let’s move towards the classical form.

According to Brahma Parva Chapter 39 of Bhavishya Purana, Lord Kartikeya is worshiped for the victory of Shashthi Tithi. According to the Hindu calendar, the sixth day of Kartik month is known as Ravi Shashthi, and Lord Surya (surya puja) is worshiped on this day.

Lord Surya Narayan is worshiped as Chhath on Kartik Shashthi. The word Chhath is actually a distorted form of Shashthi, which came to be called ‘Chhathi’ in the folk tradition of North India. On this day, while offering Arghya to Lord Kartikeya, chant the following mantra.

Ehi Surya Sahasransho Tejorashe Jagatpate.

Compassionate Mother God Grihanarghya Diwakar.

• Chhath festival, this difficult fast which lasts for about four days, starts with Nahay-Khay, when after bathing and worship, the devotee consumes a vegetable made of rice and milky gram pulses.
• Kharna is celebrated on the second day, in which the fasting person eats only sweet rice.
• On the third day, the waterless fast of about 36 hours begins. In the evening, the vrat and his/her family members go to the river or pond, stand in waist-deep water and offer arghya to the setting sun and offer fruits and sweets as prasad.
• On the last day, this fast ends with offering Arghya to the rising sun.
