India Team at Chess Olympiad 2024: The Indian men’s chess team has moved towards the gold medal by defeating Iran 3.5-0.5 in the eighth round of the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. With this win, the Indian team remains on top with 16 points and is making a strong claim for the gold medal in the final round of the tournament. At the same time, the Indian women’s team faced a tough fight against Poland and lost 1.5-2.5.
Indian Chess Men’s team continues to shine
In the men’s category, Arjun Erigaisi, playing with black pieces, defeated Bardia Daneshwar to give the Indian team the lead. After this, D. Gukesh further strengthened the team’s lead by defeating Param Maghsoodlu. R. Praggnanandhaa ensured India’s victory by playing a draw with Amin Tabatabai. Vidit Gujrati increased the points of the Indian team by winning against Idani Poya.
Arjun Erigaisi has so far scored 7.5 points in eight matches and his live rating is now 2793. If he crosses 2800 rating points, he will become the 16th player in the world and the second player from India to achieve this feat. D. Gukesh is also among the top five players with 2785 points, making it the first time that two Indians have managed to make it to the top five in the world rankings.
Indian Chess Women’s Team suffers setback
In the women’s category, the Indian team faced a tough match against Poland. Grandmaster D. Harika’s poor performance continued and she lost to Elina Kashlinskaya. R. Vaishali also lost to Monika Socko. However, Divya Deshmukh scored an important point for the team by defeating Alexandra Maltsevskaya. Vantika Agarwal ended her match in a draw, but failed to lead the team to victory.
After this defeat, the total points of the Indian women’s team have become 14 and they are jointly at the top with Poland and Kazakhstan. In the next round, the Indian men’s team will face Uzbekistan, while the women’s team will face America.
