Bibek Debroy Death: Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council Chairman and economist Bibek Debroy passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024. Bibek Debroy has been associated with many major institutions of the Government of India. He was appointed to the post of chairman in September 2017. In January 2015, he was made a permanent member of NITI Aayog. Then Planning Commission was replaced by NITI Aayog. Expressing grief over his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Dr. Bibek Debroy has been described as a great scholar.

Since the Modi government came to power in 2014, Bibek Debroy has been associated with the departments preparing the economic policy of the government. As Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council Chairman, Bibek Debroy has been continuously advising the government on macroeconomic issues, fiscal policy, employment and management of public sector companies. During the year 2014 to 2015, he has also been the chairman of the committee formed for the reorganization of the Railway Ministry.
Bibek Debroy completed his schooling at Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur. After that he studied at Presidency College, Kolkata and Delhi School of Economics. After this, he went to the University of Cambridge to pursue higher education through Trinity College Scholarship. Sharing his picture with Bibek Debroy on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, I have known Dr. Bibek Debroy for many years. I will always remember fondly his deep knowledge and passion for academic discourse. PM Modi said that he is deeply saddened by the demise of Bibek Debroy. The Prime Minister has sent his condolences to his family and friends.

PM Modi said, Bibek Debroy was a great scholar who had immense knowledge of economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and other fields. Through his works he has left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of India. In addition to his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts and making them accessible to youth.
Bibek Debroy worked in Presidency College from 1979 to 1983. After this, he was associated with the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune from 1983 to 1987. Bibek Debroy has also written many books and translated religious scriptures.
