The Union Health Ministry took major action on Tuesday (31 December) to stop fake medicines in the market. Under this, CDSCO raided a wholesaler of medicines in Kolkata and recovered a cache of fake medicines for cancer, diabetes and other diseases. The price of these medicines is said to be around Rs 6.6 crore. This action was taken jointly by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), Eastern Region and the Drug Control Directorate of West Bengal.
Medicines for these diseases were found in the raid
According to information received from the Health Ministry, medicines for cancer, diabetes and other diseases have been recovered during the raid. These medicines are being considered fake. Actually, these medicines were labeled as being manufactured in countries like Ireland, Turkey, America and Bangladesh, but no concrete documents were found to import them in India. The market value of the seized medicines is estimated to be around Rs 6.60 crore. Samples of these medicines have been sent for testing. At the same time, the remaining medicines have been confiscated by CDSCO.
Investigation will be done after action
It is being told that the owner of this wholesale trading firm is a woman, who has been arrested. The police presented the accused in the court, where he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days. This matter is being investigated.
CDSCO reports fake medicines every month
It is noteworthy that a report is issued every month by CDSCO regarding counterfeit medicines. Before preparing this report, samples of medicines are taken from different markets every month. Action is taken against those medicines which are not found as per the standard. In the report released in the month of November, samples of 41 medicines could not pass the quality test, the state drug testing laboratories had kept 70 samples in this category. At the same time, in November 2024, samples of two medicines were identified as fake medicines. Of these, one sample was taken by Bihar Drug Control Authority and the other by CDSCO Ghaziabad. These medicines were made by unauthorized and unknown manufacturers using the brand names of other companies.
