This is because before this India was successful in winning two consecutive test matches played in Melbourne. India was successful in winning the Melbourne Test 1978 by 222 runs. After this, India defeated Australia by 59 runs in Melbourne Test 1981. But Melbourne Test 1985 was drawn. Due to which India could not make a record of hat-trick test win at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
