Jay Shah on Head Coach Gautam Gambhir: After Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir has taken over the responsibility of the head coach of Team India. As soon as Gambhir came, he has created a huge difference between white ball and red ball cricket. Even different teams are being prepared for different formats. Now BCCI secretary Jay Shah has given a sharp answer to the question of giving the responsibility of the team to Gambhir in all three formats.
In a conversation with Times of India, Jay Shah was asked why the idea of giving different coaches to Team India for three different formats was not considered. On this, the BCCI secretary said, “Once we appoint a coach, his decisions have to be implemented. We have appointed Gautam Gambhir as the coach, if he wants to coach all three formats, then who am I to say that he is not capable of coaching a particular format. Usually 70 percent of the players are playing in all three formats.”
Jai Shah was also asked what decision will be taken if a back-up coach is needed? On this, he said that NCA is full of world-class trainers. Apart from this, he took the example of NCA President VVS Laxman, who was seen handling the responsibility of Team India in the absence of Rahul Dravid.
How was Gambhir’s first series?
Gautam Gambhir took charge of Team India as a coach for the first time on the recent Sri Lanka tour. Team India did not face much difficulty in winning the T20 series because India defeated the neighboring country 3-0 under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. But the 2-0 defeat in the three-match ODI series has raised questions on Gautam Gambhir’s strategies. The first match of the series was a tie, while India lost the next two matches.
