BCCI scraps Impact Player Rule: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken a shocking decision to abolish the Impact Player Rule. Notice has been sent to the cricket associations of all the states that the Impact Player rule will not be applicable in any way in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But no ban has been imposed on its use in the next season of the Indian Premier League i.e. IPL 2025.
BCCI wrote in the notice sent to the states, “Please note that BCCI has decided to remove the impact player rule from the current domestic season.” Let us tell you that the Impact Player Rule was introduced as an experiment in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, after which it was implemented in the IPL as well. During the last season of IPL, top players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have also expressed their opposition to the impact player rule.
Last season, Mohammad Siraj had said that with the introduction of this rule, there is nothing left for the bowlers in IPL. This rule also came under criticism because it was said to be the reason for ruining the careers of all-rounder players. Despite all this, most of the IPL team owners and broadcasters had said that with the introduction of this rule the tournament has become more exciting and competitive.
Well, the Impact Player Rule has now been removed from Indian domestic cricket, but it will be interesting to see whether this rule will continue in the league even after IPL 2025. At present, it is certain that the Impact Player rule is not going anywhere from the next season of IPL. Apart from this, if we look at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, BCCI has re-introduced the rule of 2 bouncer balls in an over in domestic T20 cricket.
