Sowmya Accused Director For Rape: After the release of Hema Committee report, the Me Too movement has once again become active in the Malayalam film industry. Actresses in other states of South are also revealing about the harassment they faced. Recently, actress Soumya also told how a Tamil director raped her and all this continued to happen to her for a year.
In an interview to NDTV, Soumya said, “I was 18 years old and in the first year of college… I came from a very secure background and my parents knew nothing about films. The opportunity to work in a Tamil film came through my college theatre contacts.”
The actress was not comfortable with the director
Soumya further said- ‘I was a child, that’s why I was attracted to actress Revathi who lived near my house at that time. I was in a fantasy world, so I went for a screen test with this couple.’ The actress told that the director told her father that he had spent a lot of money on her screen test. Soumya said that she was not comfortable with that person. But she felt obliged to do that film.
‘I was under his control and he did that to me…’
The actress further said- ‘During the first outdoor shoot, he did not talk to me. The deal was that his wife would be the director, but it was only on paper. Actually, he was directing the entire film and so I was under his control and he behaved silently with me as many men are used to doing. Saumya further says that the director’s behavior changed with her later.
‘He kissed me saying he is his daughter…’
Saumya says, ‘I was a teenager who was rebellious at home and suddenly this couple started treating me well, bribing me with good food. It was a process of grooming. He knew very well what he was doing. One day, when his wife was not around, this man kissed me, calling me his daughter. I was completely shocked. I was so excited to tell my friends, but couldn’t.’
The director kept raping the actress for a year
The actress then says- ‘I was ashamed thinking that I had done something wrong and I was bound to behave well with this man. So I continued to go for practice, for dance rehearsals. Every day I would go back and slowly this man used my body completely for his benefit. At some point he forced himself on me. So he raped me. This went on for about a year when I was in college.’
‘He used to call me his ‘daughter’ and wanted a child from me only’
Soumya said- ‘He used to call me his ‘daughter’ repeatedly and wanted a child from me.’ According to the actress, the director messed with her mind. She said- ‘It took me 30 years to recover from this feeling of ‘shame’. I encourage victims to report all such abuses.’ Soumya did not reveal the identity of the accused director during this time, she said that she would reveal his identity to the special police team formed by the Kerala government.
