Aamir Khan On Pay Parity: From Bollywood to South Industry, there is a discussion that actresses are paid less than actors in films. From Anushka Sharma to Kangana Ranaut, everyone has opposed paying less fees to actresses. Aamir Khan had talked about this years ago and told the reason why actresses are paid less than actors in films.
Aamir Khan spoke to NDTV during the promotion of the film ‘Talaash’. Actresses Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji were also present with him during this time. When he was asked about actresses being paid less than actors, Aamir Khan answered this.
‘Fees are linked to the ability to fill the theatre’
Aamir Khan said- ‘I have a very good answer to this, the fact is that in films your fees are related to your ability to fill the theatre. Yes heroines work very hard, but so do cameramen, so do lightmen. So everyone should be paid equally.’ On this answer of Aamir, the host asked him whether he is comparing heroines with light boys.
Why do actresses get less fees than actors?
The ‘Talaash’ actor replied- ‘No, I am comparing the heroine, the light boy and myself. Everyone is working, everyone is working hard, then why are everyone getting different fees. This is not about a man or a woman, you are confused. The reason for different pay in cinema is that market forces understand who brings back how much money.’
‘It has nothing to do with gender’
Aamir Khan further says- ‘If I am getting 10 rupees, I will get that money back or even more than that. If I am getting 5 rupees, if Rani can fill more seats than me, I am 100 percent sure that she will get more payment than me. So it has nothing to do with gender.’
