Giving priority to the health and convenience of women, Sikkim University has taken an important step. Now girl students will be given one day leave every month during periods. This decision was announced by the university’s registrar Laxman Sharma on December 4. This decision was taken on the request of the student union Sikkim University Students Association (SUSA).
What is the new system?
According to the notification of the University, this leave will be given to girl students every month, but it will not be applicable during examinations. The Registrar also clarified that this leave will be adjusted in the criteria of 75 percent attendance of girl students, so that it does not affect their academic performance.
Sikkim High Court had also taken steps
This is not the first time that Sikkim has taken such a step in the interest of women. Earlier, Sikkim High Court had started giving 2-3 days pad leave to its female employees during menstruation. This initiative makes the High Court the first court in the country to make the provision of periods leave for women.
What did the High Court say?
According to the notification of the High Court, women employees are given leave on the basis of the recommendation of the medical staff. There will be no deduction in salary on taking leave. This leave will also not be counted in the leave account of women employees.
Commendable step by the student union
The credit for this decision goes to the student union at Sikkim University, which raised the issue last month. According to the student union, it is sometimes difficult for girl students to attend classes during periods, and this leave was very important for their health and comfort.
A step towards women’s rights
These decisions of Sikkim University and High Court are being considered as a big step towards women’s health and their rights. This will not only increase their efficiency, but will also take care of their mental and physical health.
