Guru Purnima 2024: According to folk tradition, the day of Guru Purnima is special for the Guru and the disciple. On this day, the disciples touch the feet of their Guru and seek his blessings. According to Vrat Chandrika Chapter No. 12, the full moon day of the month of Ashadha is celebrated as Guru Purnima in the memory of Lord Ved Vyas.
According to Mahabharata Adi Parva 104.15, Veda Vyasa interpreted the four Vedas, Rigveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda and Samaveda, hence he was given the title ‘Vyas’ and since his complexion was black, he was called Krishna.
Why is Veda Vyasa called Dwaipayana?
According to Mahabharata Adi Parva 63.86, Ved Vyas was left on the Yamuna island during this time, hence his name was Dwaipayana. He is considered to be one of the first Gurus, hence it is a tradition that on this day we should worship all the Gurus in our life and take their blessings.
The day of Guru Purnima is very important for those who believe in the Guru-disciple tradition. According to Kalpabheda, Narayan is considered to be the first Guru, hence the tradition of celebrating Guru Purnima has been going on since the time of Lord Narayan (Lord Vishnu).
Since ancient times, the Sadgurus and enlightened ones in India have preserved the highest knowledge available on many physical and spiritual subjects established in our culture and have worked to advance it for the welfare of humanity. This tradition of remembering them and expressing gratitude towards them has been going on since ancient times, which we celebrate in the form of Guru Purnima.
It is because of this Guru-Shishya parampara that it has been ensured in every culture of our country that they and the coming generations keep getting such knowledge which provides the formulae for acquiring high quality knowledge for human welfare and mental and spiritual purification. Every Guru of the Guru parampara has presented this eternal knowledge in a simple and meaningful form as per the need of the generations of his time.
According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, there is a difference between an Acharya and a Guru. A teacher merely imparts information about certain subjects while a Guru transforms the life of his disciple. A Guru shares spiritual knowledge with true seekers and leads the devotee to their ultimate goal of perfection and liberation.
Our scriptures have emerged from that tradition. Traditionally, the personalities of our Gurus in every era have been impressive and full of extraordinary qualities. By simply remembering them on this day, we are able to experience their qualities within ourselves, even if it is for a short period.
