Dev Uthani Ekadashi fasting story (Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024 Vrat katha in Hindi)
According to the mythological story related to Devuthani Ekadashi, in the kingdom of a king of a city, all the people (from the king to the subjects) used to worship Ekadashi as per the rituals and observe fast. In this state, the rules of Ekadashi were also completely followed and food was not given even to animals and birds on the day of Ekadashi.
Once a person came to the city in search of a job. He asked for a job from the king. The king said that you will get work but the condition is that you will get food here every day, but food will not be given on the day of Ekadashi. The person accepted the king’s condition and started working.
When the day of Ekadashi came, he was given only fruits instead of food for his fast. He ate fruits but it did not fill his stomach. He reached the royal court and told the king that if he did not fill his stomach by eating fruits, he would die if he did not eat some of his food. He folded his hands in front of the king and prayed for food.
Then the king reminded him of the condition. But even on this he did not agree. Ultimately the king got him flour, pulses, rice etc. As usual, the servant reached the river bank for bath and after bath started cooking food. After preparing the food, he started calling God to accept it.
Then Lord Vishnu appeared there. He also served food to God. God ate food and man also ate food. After the meal, Lord Sri Hari returned to Vaikuntha and the person also returned to his work. After 15 days, when Ekadashi date came again, he demanded double the amount of food from the king. He told the king that last time the Lord also had food after him, due to which his stomach was not completely filled.
The king was surprised to hear the servant’s words. The king said, “How can the Lord eat with you?” The king gave him double the food but hid behind a tree on the river bank to see whether the servant was telling the truth or a lie. As usual, the servant first took bath in the river, then cooked food and then started praying to God to accept the food.
But this time God did not come. He prayed to God many times to come. But when God did not come, he said that Lord, if you do not come, I will jump into the river. Despite this, God did not come there and finally he went near the river and started jumping. Then Lord Srihari came and stopped him and sat and had food with him and then went to Vaikuntha.
The king was surprised to see all this scene. He came to know that for any fast, a person’s mind should be pure and his conduct should be pure. Only then the fast ends and one gets its fruits. After this, the king also started fasting on Ekadashi with a pure heart and devotion.
