IPL Auction Controversies: IPL 2025 mega auction is not far away, in which bids worth crores can be made on many big and famous players. According to reports, each team will have the right to retain a maximum of 5 players and the team will be able to use Right to Match (RTM card) on one player. The auction has proved to be full of thrill every time, but many big controversies have also been seen in it. So let’s take a look at the 3 biggest controversies in IPL auction history.
1. Punjab Kings confused on Shashank Singh
In the IPL 2024 auction, the name of one Shashank Singh came up, who plays domestic cricket for Chhattisgarh. Punjab Kings owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia, after some consideration, made the first bid and Shashank became a part of the Punjab team in the very next moment. After some time, the owners of Punjab Kings realized that they had placed the wrong bid on Shashank Singh. Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia demanded the return of 32-year-old Shashank and bid on another Shashank Singh, but their demand was rejected due to IPL rules.
2. CSK bought Andrew Flintoff
England bowler Andrew Flintoff became the most expensive player in the 2009 auction, with a bid of Rs 9.8 crore. Controversy arose when former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi revealed that the IPL 2009 auction was fixed as he had ensured that Flintoff would be bought by CSK at all costs. But N Srinivasan, who was the BCCI secretary at that time, had completely rejected these things.
3. RCB and KKR clash over Yuvraj Singh
In the year 2014, a big controversy had arisen over Yuvraj Singh. There was a debate between RCB and KKR on buying Yuvraj Singh and the bid in the auction reached Rs 10 crore. Controversy arose when the host of the auction declared Yuvraj Singh ‘sold’ to RCB. But then KKR said that they had bid, but it was not taken into consideration. After some consideration, the bid on Yuvraj was re-issued and finally RCB bought this legendary all-rounder of India for Rs 14 crore.
