Therefore, it is considered one of the toughest fasts.
According to the Panchang, Jivitputrika fast is observed on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. This year Jitiya fast will be observed on Wednesday, 25 September 2024 and the fast will be observed the next day i.e. on 26 September 2024.
Jimutvaahan is worshipped during Jivitputrika fast
Jimutavahana was a Gandharva prince. But he left all his kingdom and went to the forest. One day in the forest, Jimutavahana met an old woman who belonged to the Naga clan. That woman was crying a lot. When Jimutavahana asked her the reason for crying, she said that the snakes had promised the bird king Garuda that he would be given a snake every day as food. The old woman said that today it was her son Shankhachud’s turn.
Jimutavahana told the old woman that nothing will happen to your son and he will not become the prey of the bird king Garuda today, because I will go today in place of your son. Saying this, Jimutavahana went to Garuda. Garuda caught Jimutavahana wrapped in red cloth in his claws and flew away. Jimutavahana started crying and groaning in pain.
Hearing his voice, Garuda stopped on a peak, then Jimutvahana told Garuda everything, and Garuda was very pleased to see Jimutvahana’s compassion and courage. He gave Jimutvahana life and also promised that from today onwards he will not make any snake his food.
In this way, the Naga dynasty was saved due to the efforts of Jimutvaahan. It is believed that since then Jimutvaahan is worshipped in the Jivitputrika Vrat. It is believed that, just as Jimutvaahan saved the life of Shankhachud, the child of an old woman, in the same way he will protect the children of all mothers and will never let their laps go empty.
Jivitputrika fast is a protective shield for children
There is a belief about Jivitputrika Vrat that due to the effect of this fast, children never suffer from any kind of pain. Also, children get the blessings of long life and good health.
It is mentioned in Mahabharata that Ashwatthama killed five children of Draupadi. After this Arjuna imprisoned him and took away his Divyamani from him. After this Ashwatthama got angry and out of revenge killed the child growing in the womb of Abhimanyu’s wife Uttara in the womb itself.
But Shri Krishna revived the unborn child growing in Uttara’s womb. Due to this revival after death, he was named Jivitputrika. Therefore, Jivitputrika Vrat is considered equivalent to a protective shield for children.
