Vaijayanti Mala was born on 13 August 1933 in Madras (now Chennai) in a Tamil Brahmin family. Her father Mandyam Dhathi Raman and mother Vasundhara Devi both belonged to Tamil families. Vaijayanti Mala married Chamanlal Bali in 1968, with whom she has a son Suchindra Bali. Her husband died in 1986 and since then Vaijayanti Mala has raised the child alone.

Vaijayanti Mala learned many classical dances like Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi. Vaijayanti Mala, who debuted in the Tamil film Vazhakai in 1949, worked in many Tamil and Telugu films. Vaijayanti Mala debuted in Hindi cinema with the film Bahar in 1951. After this, Vaijayanti Mala worked as a lead actress in successful Hindi films like ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Sooraj’, ‘Sangam’, ‘Sangharsh’, ‘Madhumati’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Pyar Hi Pyar’, ‘Saathi’, ‘Loafer’, ‘Paigam’, ‘Asha’, ‘Nagin’ and ‘Zindagi’. From 1949 to 1989, Vaijayanti Mala did about 70 films. Most of these proved to be hits. Vaijayanti Mala has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress several times. In 1968, she was honored with the Padma Shri Award, in 1979 she was given the Tamil Nadu State Artist Award. In the same year, she also received an honor from the Tamil Nadu government.
In May this year, Vaijayanti Mala was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by President Draupadi Murmu. From 1950 to 1960, Vaijayanti Mala was a hyped actress with whom almost all the big filmmakers wanted to work but she did not have time.
