IPL 2025 Mega Auction Retention Rules: BCCI had a meeting with IPL team owners on July 31. After that, a recent report has come out that BCCI can allow each franchise to retain 6 players, in which the option of Right to Match Card (RTM) will also be open. Now Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has objected to the RTM card rule and has also given an example of it.
this rule is the stupidest
Ravichandran Ashwin called the Right to Match rule nonsense and said, “I don’t find anything more unfair than the Right to Match rule because what has been its significance till now. For example, a player is playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and his salary is currently 5 or 6 crores. This player goes to the auction and Sunrisers Hyderabad wants to buy him again. This means that Sunrisers will start the bid for that player with the base price i.e. Rs 2 crore.”
It’s no use
Ashwin further said that if KKR and MI are bidding on that player, which goes up to 6 crores. Ashwin says that if MI buys that player for Rs 6 crore, then only SRH can retain the player by bidding the same amount. The problem here is that SRH will be happy, but KKR and MI will be unhappy. In such a situation, the player will not have any fair value. Where 2 teams were fighting for a player, then SRH jumps in between and says that their player should be returned to them. Ashwin made it clear by giving an example that this rule has more disadvantages than advantages.
After all, what is the Right to Match rule?
Actually, Right to Match can be applied during the bidding. Suppose if a team has been bid for 5-6 crores and its old team wants to retain it. Then that team can throw the Right to Match card in the field by offering the same amount as the bid placed on it.
