In the city of Shanghai, China, an HR manager has shocked a scam to steal a huge amount of about 16 million yuan i.e. about 19 crores from his company. For this, he made a record of 22 fake employees and grabbed the amount of salary and retirement allowance in his name. The scam lasted for 8 years and he was caught in 2022.
How did the scam happen?
This HR manager named Yang used to handle the salary and payment of temporary workers in a tech company. He came to know that there is a lack of monitoring in the company and has complete control over the appointment of employees and salary payment. Taking advantage of this, he made a record of a fake employee, named ‘Sun’. Yang applied for salary in the name of Sun and transferred that amount to his controlled bank account. When the Labor Service Company investigated not getting the salary of the sun, Yang blamed the tech company.
Scam lasted for 8 years
Investigation revealed that Yang had set a record of 22 fake employees from 2014. In the name of these ‘Ghost Employees’, he stole a total amount of 16 million yuan of about 19 crores.
How was the scam caught?
In 2022, the Finance Department of Tech Company suspected that Sun’s attendance record is perfect and always gets salary on time, but it was never seen in office. After this, the officials were informed and the investigation started. Investigation revealed that Yang had created this scam through fake attendance records and bank transactions for 8 years. Yang was sentenced to 10 years 2 months in jail on charges of corruption. His political rights were also taken away for a year and ordered to pay the fine.
Family will return money
Yang was ordered to refund 1.1 million yuan (about Rs 1.52 crore) from the stolen amount, while his family was asked to return 1.2 million yuan (about Rs 1.66 crore).

The matter came to light in the Chinese media in March, which brought a storm on social media. People expressed surprise and anger at this scam. One user wrote, “The parole system of the labor service company was so weak that people like Yang took advantage of it.” The second user said, “Yang is a great fraud! When the real employees were upset without salary, he stole so much money. He should be ashamed.”
