Takeaways From BCCI Review Meeting: India’s 1-3 defeat in the Test series against Australia had raised questions on the future of Team India. Before that, India suffered a 0-3 clean sweep in the home Test series at the hands of New Zealand. The poor performance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in both these series was heavily criticized. Gautam Gambhir was taken to task and speculations started about giving a new captain to the team. Some similar topics were discussed in depth in the BCCI review meeting. According to reports, this meeting lasted for 2 hours. Know here what were the 5 main points of this meeting?
1. Will Rohit Sharma remain the captain or not?
Rohit Sharma had scored only 31 runs in five innings of the series against Australia. Surrounded by criticism, Rohit Sharma said in the review meeting that he wants to remain the captain for some time. Rohit also said that if BCCI continues to search for a new captain in the future, he will not have any problem. There was a discussion in the meeting on making Jasprit Bumrah the new Test captain, but no consensus could be reached because Bumrah’s fitness remains a matter of constant concern.
2. The blame will fall on Gautam Gambhir’s support staff!
The performance of the Indian team under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir has not been anything special. The Test team has suffered crushing defeats at the hands of New Zealand and Australia. In the review meeting, questions were raised on the contribution of two members of Gautam Gambhir’s support staff, Ryan ten Deutsche and Abhishek Nair in Test matches. However, Morne Morkel has a lot of experience of playing in the longer format, so his position as bowling coach can remain safe.
3. Will Virat Kohli play Test against England or not?
Virat Kohli is being trolled a lot for his form, while he has to face constant trouble on balls outside the off-stump. He scored only 93 runs in 6 innings against New Zealand. Whereas in the series against Australia, only 190 runs came from his bat. According to sources, the decision on the career of Kohli as well as Rohit will not be taken till the Champions Trophy. If both of them fail in the Champions Trophy, then BCCI will be forced to take steps to drop them from the team.
4. No decision till Champions Trophy
In the review meeting, a member asked that India got a clean sweep in the home Test series, there must be some problems within the team. The performance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was discussed and expectations were expressed from both of them to do better. For the time being, the only update that has come out is that everything will continue like this till the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, but after that, a big decision is possible on everything from captaincy to coach and the Test career of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
5. Players do not have freedom to take decisions
Now the players themselves will not have the freedom to choose whether they want to play in a bilateral series or in domestic cricket. If a player wants to opt out of a bilateral series, he will have to submit a medical report.
