Also, people were appealed to deposit it. However, despite all efforts, 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 7409 crore have still not returned. Now the government has informed that they had to spend Rs 3.54 to print one 2000 rupee note. Rs 3540 was spent in printing a bundle of these 1000 notes.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave information to the Parliament
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Parliament that the printing of all the new notes between July 2016 and June 2018 cost Rs 12877 crore. Finance Minister Sitharaman said that according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), 370.2 crore notes of Rs 2000 were supplied. Its value is Rs 7.40 lakh crore. Along with Rs 2000 notes, the government also issued new series notes of Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, Rs 20, Rs 20 and Rs 10.
The government had to spend Rs 3.54 on one note
The Finance Minister said that the cost of printing 1000 pieces of 2000 rupee notes is Rs 3540. According to this, the government had to spend Rs 3.54 on one note. According to this, Rs 1310.50 crore was spent on printing 370.2 crore notes. The Finance Minister said that when the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes was announced on 19 May 2023, banknotes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation, out of which notes worth Rs 3.48 lakh crore have returned to the banking system by 30 June 2024.
More than 2% of 2000 rupee notes not returned
The Finance Minister said that in November 2026, 500 and 1,000 rupee notes were 86.4 percent of the total notes. Therefore, 2000 rupee note was introduced. After its purpose was fulfilled, it was discontinued. He said that people were not even preferring 2000 bank notes for transactions. However, 2.08 percent of 2000 rupee notes are yet to be returned.
