India’s southern state Karnataka is in constant discussion these days. The issue of local people’s participation in the private sector has not even cooled down when now a controversy has arisen regarding working hours. The IT employees unions are angry at the proposal of the state government to increase the limit of working hours. Now the IT industry organization NASSCOM has also opposed the proposal.
Association in favor of 48-hour work week
National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), an organization of IT companies, said on Sunday that it is not in favor of increasing the limit of daily working hours for IT employees to 14 hours. NASSCOM says that it fully supports 48 hours of work in a week (48 hours work week), which is the standard system in the whole country.
NASSCOM denies such a request
The organization’s Vice President and Public Policy Head Ashish Agarwal said – We at NASSCOM have not made any request for a 14-hour work day or a 70-hour work week. We have not yet seen the copy of the proposed bill in Karnataka. So we cannot comment on it. But we fully support the 48-hour work week, which is the standard system in the whole country.
At present, there is a 10-hour limit in Karnataka
Earlier, it was being reported in the news that the state government of Karnataka is preparing to make changes in labor laws. The government is going to introduce the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments (Amendment) Bill, in which an attempt is being made to normalize the 14-hour working day. In the current system of the state, there is a limit of maximum 10 hours of work in a day, which also includes overtime.
This is why the labor unions are protesting
This means that under the current laws, employees in any company or office or shop can be made to work for a maximum of 10 hours in a day. This maximum limit also includes overtime. If the proposed amendment that is being talked about in its place is implemented, then companies will be able to make their employees work for up to 14 hours in a day. This is the reason why the labor unions of IT employees are opposing the proposed law.
